Festival Guide
Section 01
What Is Lightning in a Bottle?
Lightning in a Bottle is not your average music festival. Founded in 2006 by the Do LaB collective, LiB is a transformational arts and music gathering held annually at Lake San Antonio in Paso Robles, California. It sits at the intersection of consciousness, creativity, and community — think Coachella meets Burning Man, but with better yoga and a lake to swim in.
The festival spans five days and nights and draws around 17,000 attendees each year. What sets it apart is its commitment to sustainability, wellness, and intentional community — alongside a genuinely world-class music programme spanning electronic, live, and experimental sounds.
Founded
2006 — The Do LaB
Born as a small gathering, now one of California's most beloved transformational festivals with a fiercely loyal following.
Unique to LiB
Conscious Community
Leave No Trace ethics, wellness workshops, art installations, yoga, and sustainability initiatives woven throughout.
Setting
Lake San Antonio
Lakeside campsite with swimming, SUPs, and stunning golden-hour views. The lake is a central feature of the experience.
Music
Electronic to Live
Deep house, techno, ambient, world music, live bands — multiple stages running continuously from midday to sunrise.
First Timer?
"Lightning in a Bottle rewards those who arrive with an open mind and no fixed plan. The magic is in what you stumble upon — the 4am lakeside DJ, the workshop you didn't know you needed, the people you'll know forever."
Section 02
The Stages & Areas
LiB is made up of several distinct stage environments, each with its own energy, aesthetic, and sound. Getting familiar with them before you arrive helps you plan your days — and nights — much more intentionally.
The Thunder Stage
Main Stage
The headline acts and most anticipated sets happen here. Open-air, large capacity, late-night energy. Dress to impress.
The Woogie Stage
Underground / Electronic
Intimate, dark, and relentlessly good. The Woogie is for the deep house and techno devotees who dance until dawn.
The Lightning Stage
Live Music
Live bands, eclectic sounds, afternoon magic. A more diverse musical offering in a beautiful open-air setting.
Compass
Workshops & Talks
The intellectual and spiritual heart of LiB. Lectures, workshops, meditation, yoga, and consciousness explorations.
The Igloo
Intimate / Experimental
Hidden gem for experimental sounds and smaller, more intimate experiences. Worth finding every evening.
The Lake
Nature & Wellness
Swimming, paddleboarding, lakeside yoga. The spiritual reset button you'll need after a long night of dancing.
"The Woogie at sunrise, the lake at midday, the Thunder Stage at midnight. That's the Lightning in a Bottle trinity — and once you've experienced it, nothing else quite compares."
— A LiB Veteran, returning for their 7th year

What to Wear — The LiB Style Guide
Lightning in a Bottle has its own distinct aesthetic — somewhere between Burning Man's expressive freedom and Coachella's sun-drenched boho glamour, filtered through a Northern California conscious-community lens. The vibe is colourful, layered, expressive, and always functional.
The golden rule at LiB: you can never be too creative, but you can absolutely be under-prepared. Nights get cold, mornings get dusty, and afternoons bake. Your wardrobe needs to handle all three.
The LiB Aesthetic in Four Words
01
Expressive
LiB rewards boldness. Colour, pattern, rhinestones, faux fur — maximalism is celebrated, not judged.
02
Layered
Day-to-night temperature swings of 20°C+ are normal at Lake San Antonio. Every outfit must adapt.
03
Conscious
Ethical, sustainable, and considered. Vintage pieces, quality over quantity, and pieces that last.
04
Functional
Looks that work for walking, dancing, swimming, camping, and everything in between. Comfort is non-negotiable.

What NOT to Wear at LiB
LiB veterans learn quickly. Here's what the community consistently advises leaving at home — and what to bring instead.
Leave at home
- New shoes not broken in
- Anything white (dust & mud)
- Heels of any kind on grass
- Jeans — heavy & slow to dry
- Irreplaceable or sentimental items
- Tiny bags that hold nothing
- Open-toe sandals at night
- Anything requiring ironing
- Culturally appropriative costumes
- Single-use plastic accessories
Bring instead
- Worn-in boots with grip soles
- Bold colours that hide dirt
- Platform boots or chunky flats
- Shorts, flares, or light trousers
- Festival-specific pieces you love freely
- Secure zipped crossbody bag
- Closed-toe shoes or boots at night
- Fabrics that look lived-in by design
- Original creative expression
- Reusable, sustainable accessories
LiB Community Note
Lightning in a Bottle has a strong and intentional community culture. Respect for others, the land, and the environment is core to the LiB experience. Avoid anything that appropriates other cultures, and always prioritise leave-no-trace principles.
Section 05
Dressing for the LiB Weather
Lake San Antonio in late May is famously unpredictable. Afternoons can reach 35°C+ with full sun exposure; nights can drop to 8–12°C with wind off the lake. Dust is a near-constant factor. Anyone who underestimates the temperature swing will feel it.

Shade hats required
Light breathable fabrics
Hydration is critical
🌙
Cold Nights

Faux fur non-negotiable
Thermal base layer
Warm socks essential
Scarf or neck warmer

The LiB Layering Formula
"Bodysuit or swimsuit base → sheer or mesh mid-layer you can tie around your waist → faux fur or warm jacket for night. You'll wear all three, often within the same hour."
Section 06
The Complete LiB Packing List
Tailored specifically for LiB's five-day camping format at Lake San Antonio. Starred items are absolute non-negotiables — don't even think about leaving without them.
Clothing
-
2–3 statement bodysuits ★ — Your foundation pieces. Rhinestone, sequin, or embellished. The hero of every LiB look.
-
Mesh or sheer overlay tops ×2 — Layering essentials. Work over bodysuits for the transition from day heat to night cool.
-
High-waisted shorts ×2 ★ — The festival workhorse. Pack two in different colours so they're interchangeable.
-
Flare or wide-leg trousers — For evening. Flowy, festive, and warmer than shorts when the temperature drops.
-
Swimsuit or bikini ★ — Non-negotiable. The lake is central to the LiB experience. Pack two if you have them.
-
Faux fur jacket or coat ★ — Absolutely essential. Nights at the lake are cold and windy. This is your lifeline.
-
Lightweight layer (denim or hoodie) — For the transition hours between sunset and deep night.
-
Festival boots (worn-in) ★ — The most important footwear decision you'll make. Ankle-height, grip soles, already broken in.
-
Camp sandals or slides — For the tent, the lake, and resting your feet between sets.
-
Water shoes for the lake — Rocky lake bed makes barefoot swimming uncomfortable. Worth the bag space.
-
Thick socks ×5+ pairs ★ — More than you think you need. Damp socks ruin long nights of dancing.
-
Thermal base layer — For sleeping in and very cold nights. A tight long-sleeve under your faux fur changes everything.
Accessories
-
Wide-brim or cowboy hat ★ — Sun protection and a defining look. Every great LiB photo has one.
-
Dust goggles — Not just for aesthetics. When the wind picks up, goggles are a practical necessity.
-
Secure zipped crossbody bag ★ — Your companion for every set. Small, close to the body, room for phone, cash, ID, lip balm.
-
Statement sunglasses — Chunky, UV-rated, and bold. LiB sunglasses should make a statement.
-
Rhinestone headpiece or crown — The instant LiB upgrade. Elevates any outfit from good to iconic.
-
Body chain or harness — Worn over a bodysuit or mesh for a layered, editorial look.
-
Bandana or neck scarf ×2 — Dust protection, hair accessory, impromptu blanket. The most versatile item you'll pack.
Survival Essentials
-
Portable charger (20,000mAh) ★ — Your phone is your ticket, map, torch, and camera for five days. A large power bank is essential.
-
SPF 50+ reef-safe sunscreen ★ — LiB requests reef-safe only near the lake. Reapply every 2 hours. California sun is unforgiving.
-
Reusable water bottle (1L+) ★ — Free water refill stations throughout. Staying hydrated is the single biggest factor in how you feel.
-
Headtorch or clip torch — Essential for finding your tent at 4am without waking your neighbours.
-
Blister plasters (pack of 10+) — Five days of dancing will test even broken-in shoes.
-
Quick-dry towel ★ — For the lake, morning showers, and general camp life.
-
Eye drops — Dusty terrain makes these invaluable, especially for contact lens wearers.
-
Earplugs ×2 pairs — For sleeping near stages and protecting your hearing during loud sets.
Section 07
Documents & Important Items
This is the section most people skip — and the one that causes the most problems. Losing your ticket, ID, or access to money can end your LiB before it begins.
01
Festival ticket (digital + printed)
Screenshot it. Print a backup. Phone batteries die and signal is unreliable on-site.
02
Government-issued photo ID
Required for wristband collection. A photocopy will not be accepted.
03
Vehicle or camping pass
Keep it accessible for entry — not buried in your bag while you hold up the queue.
04
Emergency contact list (printed)
If your phone dies or is lost, you need a way to reach your group and family.
05
Cash in small denominations
Some vendors are cash-only. Keep $50–100 minimum hidden separately from your main wallet.
06
Prescription medication + letter
Keep medication in original packaging. A doctor's letter is wise for anything controlled.
07
Campsite zone & meeting point
Write it down before you lose signal. Agree on a physical meeting point with your group in advance.
08
Travel & health insurance
Medical emergencies happen at multi-day festivals. Worth having the details easily accessible.
Security Tip
"Split your cash and cards across two locations — one in your crossbody, one in a hidden pocket or your tent. Never keep everything in one place at a festival."
Section 08
Survival Tips from LiB Veterans
These come from people who've done it multiple times. The kind of wisdom you wish you'd had on your first visit.
Arrive Thursday, not Friday
Thursday arrivals get better camping spots, shorter queues, and the Thursday night warm-up energy is genuinely special.
Memorise your campsite zone
Walk from your tent to the main gate three times before you first go out dancing. Your future self will be grateful at 4am.
The lake resets everything
Tired, overstimulated, or emotionally wrung out? The lake solves it. Go for a swim every day, ideally midday.
Eat actual meals
The food vendors at LiB are excellent. Proper meals sustain your energy through five long days and nights.
Say yes to workshops
The Compass schedule always has something that sounds odd and turns out to be one of your weekend highlights.
Watch the sunrise at least once
Stay until sunrise at the Woogie at least one night. It's a rite of passage and one of the most beautiful things you'll witness.
Charge before you sleep
Whatever state you return to your tent in, plug in your power bank. Waking to a dead phone is a bad start to any festival day.
Drink water between sets
Hydration is the single biggest controllable factor in how you feel across five days. Drink at every refill station you pass.
Leave No Trace
LiB takes its environmental responsibility seriously — and so should you. Pack reusable containers, take your waste to the correct disposal points, and leave your campsite cleaner than you found it. The land is what makes LiB possible.
